MIZUNOMACHIYA NANOKA-MACHI GOTENZEKI

One of Yamagata Goseki built 400 years ago, reconstructed and repaired from the Gotenzeki which flows through castle town. Old shops standing in great numbers take on new looks along the two banks of the weir.

YAMADERA
RISSHAKUJI TEMPLE

Founded by Jikakudaishi Ennin in 860, known as Yamadera. A branch of Enryakuji Temple and one of the most famous and revered Tendaishu temples in the Tohoku region. Superb views from Godaido.

YAMADERA
TREASURE MUSEUM

The collection consists of many statues, religious materials, and cultural assets. A highlight is the oldest known Japanese statue of Saicho, the founder of Tendai Buddhism.

KAJO CENTRAL

This 24-story building west of Yamagata station has an observation deck with panoramic city views, and houses Yamagata Museum of Science and Industry, the tourist information center, a movie theater and restaurants with a view.

MOMIJI PARK

An old-style garden with a path for s trol l ing a round a central pond, famous for its maple trees. Also features Seifuso, a registered national cultural asset, and Hokoan, a venue for tea ceremonies.

BUNSHOKAN

This beautiful Renaissance-style building was once the Yamagata Prefectural Office and Assembly Hall . The Bunshokan is now open to the public and contains displays on the culture and history of Yamagata Prefecture.

YAMAGATA MUSEUM OF ART

The collection includes Yamagata artists Taketaro Shinkai (sculptor)and Komatsu Hitoshi (painter), as well as modern and Western art.

MOGAMI YOSHIAKI HISTORY MUSEUM

Lord Mogami Yoshiaki was responsible for shaping the city of Yamagata. This museum displays some of the items he wore into battle, as well as materials on the castle.

YAMAGATA MANABIKAN

The main part is “to support handicraft”, to introduce the Yamagata industries including traditional craft and show cultural property of Yamagata as well.

YAMAGATA TRADITIONAL KOKESHI MUSEUM

Many Traditional Kokeshi are displayed here, including old dolls and all the past winners of the minister's prize at the Michinoku Kokeshi Festival.

YAMADERA BASHO
MEMORIAL MUSEUM

The Center displays materials related to Matsuo Basho's famous collection of haiku, Oku no Hosomichi(often referred to as"The Narrow Road to the Deep North"). Included are rarities such as writings by Basho's own hand.

YAMADERA GOTO MUSEUM

The museum's holdings center on Barbazon paintings from the collection of Yamagata native Mr. Goto. Other items in clude glass crafts and ceramic-block prints.

YAMAGATA CITY YASOUEN

The theme is “Co-existence of Human and Nature”, and there is a vast area of 26.5ha, divided into 6 parts, with more than 850 kinds of plants such as weeds, trees, etc in the four seasons.

NISHI ZAO PARK

The park with area of 720,000 ㎡ has an athletic field and campsites carefully planned to make the most of the natural surroundings. Different flowers bloom according to the season. From the viewing platform, you can see the city of Yamagata below and Mt. Gassan and the Asahi mountain range. The park is also famous for the night view.

PREFECTURAL RESIDENTS'FOREST

Located in the extensive forest of the Shirataka Hills that straddle the two cities of Yamagata and Nanyo, and the two towns of Yamanobe-machi and Shirataka-machi. Many lakes, large and small include Onuma, Aranuma, Itabashinuma and Magarinuma. Ideal place for hiking and camping.

NISHI PARK

Constructed to reduce global warming and heat island effects. This spacious park with grassed areas, a beech wood, a hot spring foot dip, sports facilities and a site for imonikai (taro soup picnics) is a place for recreation and leisure.

YUSO-NO-OKA HILL

A park constructed on the concept of “nature and people in empathy and creation”. There are footpaths and a grassed area for outdoor recreation, and views of the entire Yamagata Basin.

YAMAGATA PREFECTURE INDOOR PLAY CENTER FOR CHILDREN

Various play equipment including a 20-meter-long Waiwai Tunnel, a carpeted room for babies and toddlers, and a nursing room. You may bring and eat meals here.

CHIHITSUDO BUNKO YAMAGATA LIBRARY

The library has 30,000 books owned by Hisashi Inoue, a native of Yamagata Prefecture and winner of the Naoki Prize. Adjoining is Cybele Arena, a multipurpose hall used as a gymnasium, theater hall, etc.

ISHIUSUKAN STONE-GROUND SOBA

This soba factory produces stone-ground soba, and has displays of soba-related materials.

YAMAGATA YATAI VILLAGE HOTNARU YOKOCHO

There are 13 restaurants in Yatai Village, where you can have a taste of characteristic Japanese Cuisine and local cooking, and the warmness and considerateness may let you feel a leisurely mood and retro atmosphere, from which a unique charm is revealed.

ZAO MIHARASHI-NO-OKA MUSEUM PARK

Enjoy taro soup picnics and strolling around with views of the Zao mountain range, Mt. Gassan and the city of Yamagata.

YAMAGATA DOCUMENTARY FILM LIBRARY

Excellent works and data etc such as documentary film are preserved. There are also equipments available for showing the films.

YAMAGATA CITY INDUSTRIAL HISTORY MUSEUM

The displays in this modern building that resembles Yumedono in Horyuji Temple show everything about Yamagata casting and include pots for tea ceremonies, iron kettles, iron pots and applied arts.
